Ancient Greek Athena ? metal badge

Hi Everybody!

I came across this interesting thing in a pile of random stuff at a flea market, it's metal and looks very old. Trying to figure out what it was, seems too large for a coin, and it had some sort of a purpose judging by the back. Overall diameter is about 2.5", and the back hole is about 0.75".
Does anybody have an idea of what it is? and what age?

at 1st , I though it was a bottle cap.....but that can't be right......

 

Extremely cool-may have been the centerpiece of an old cockade for a military bicorn or tricorn hat,don't know if it's ancient Greek.

I would be interested in knowing, too. Looks like it attaches to something. At first I wondered whether it was an old scarf slide or neckerchief slide... the dimensions seem small for that.

 

You are correct that it is Athena. Metal looks like it could be bronze. Suggestions such as hat badge are as good as any. A decoration for some kind of apparel.

Yep, antique more like it, not ancient . And yes, seems to be bronze. Good thinking it might be a military cockade.
