    Hey folks

This is an item coming up at a local auction house. They are regularly wrong and usually as vague as possible to cover their own backs

Stated as :Beautiful Ancient Egyptian Statue 664-332 BC (C0)

Just one pic available and they have very limited viewing

Just wondering your thoughts, if genuine how much would some thing like this be worth ?

    Any thoughts appreciated

They are one of those small auction companies where you take everything with a pinch of salt so nothing really sells massively because they are so vague.
One picture probably can't tell you alot, but that's the gamble I suppose

I mean who would bid alot of money on something with 1 picture, and something they can't even view

Do they have a decent reputation for selling legitimate ancient items? Or is a poor word of mouth record the reason for the "gamble?"

It's a fair point bakers, that's the gamble I guess. They are way out of their depth with most things they advertise (and usually excempt from inaccuracies through small print) . But that lack of expertise on such items can leave buyers uncertain to go that extra mile I find

Oh god. That glass is SO not Roman. Far too thick, too considered and too perfect. Irridescence is all wrong too. The ushabti is about five minutes old.

So is the Indus Valley vessel.:arghh:

Antiquities is a field you'd best stay away from. Most items on auction or for sale are fake.
I follow the Catawiki antiquities auctions every week, just for a laugh. I first noticed the auctions because I collect kohl bottles, and the ones on offer are mostly 'Ancient Bactrian Bronzes' (not). Since then, looking at the fake auction listings has been one of my covid home isolation diversions.:hilarious:

A case which I have followed for years is that of a 'reputable' New York antiquities dealer. I was hugely satisfied by the outcome, although they took their time.
    Enjoy:;)

    Boy am I glad I asked :)

Amazes me how they can state something as this, and clearly have no clue

Staying away from these type of things is good advice I think. They are money traps by the sound of it
Wonder if it's ignorance on their behalf or cunning

For some ignorance, for many cunning. As long as they can get away with it.
I have seen fake atiquities dealers on ebay sell under a new name every once so often, probably because they got caught out.

    This bit made me laugh

Asked how the gallery’s website could offer “11 copies of the same statue for sale” if the statues were authentic.

Asked for comment, Sadigh, who is referred to as “Michael” in the report, told the paper at the time: “I don’t know anything about this.”
