2017-01-29 14.36.36.jpg Somebody stole his wings!
As an atheist with an atheist upbringing I have no idea who he is. Gabriel, Michael or someone like that?
The poor lad is in a pityful state, some of the paint has come off and he misses his pink, there is some moldy black stuff here and there...I do like this look though, makes him appear older than he probably is(something I would like to know too, does he look his age, or did he age too fast) just do not want him falling apart any further as he was part of the inheritance of my belgian uncle. 2017-01-29 14.44.12.jpg 2017-01-29 14.38.50.jpg 2017-01-29 14.36.47.jpg 2017-01-29 14.39.33.jpg 2017-01-29 14.40.40.jpg 2017-01-29 14.37.13.jpg

I had two thoughts when I saw this
One - There are so many unknown angels (aka people who do good things just because they can)
Two - when I saw his wings missing I thought, "Aw" :( followed quickly by, "What did he do?!":wideyed::woot:;):hilarious:

I'm thinking this one is missing not only its wings but whatever it originally held. The "chain" is, to me, someone's "artistic" addition. But it appears to be two different "pieces?" We can't really see the part hidden by his hands.

The chains are what got me thinking... Maybe it's the angel who rescued St Peter in Chains?

    Hi,
Looking at another way. Someone removed his wings and chained him so he is unable to cast bad luck on other people.

I don't think you'll ever find out who he is (but God will know him, and that's what counts:angelic:).
The chain doesn't look original, if he were meant to have a chain, it would probably be plaster as well.
This is typically the style of what is known in The Netherlands as 'het Rijke Roomse Leven', the Catholic cultural revival after the ban on Roman Catholicism was lifted. But he is probably Belgian, they were free to practice their religion after independence.
I would think he dates from 1880-1910.

2017-01-29 14.41.39.jpg this is the cross he holds which is connected to the chain. 2017-01-29 14.37.38.jpg He does look his age then. :)
If he remains nameless, I shall name him Castiel, after my favorite TV-angel...;)

You've posted this twice. As before, remove the chain because it's not original to the piece and it's scratching the surface. It may be the Angel Gabriel who is sometimes shown holding a spray of lilies.

Did you not say that your uncle had received the contents of a church? That seems an obvious provenance for this. The color pretty much precludes outdoor use. What is it made of?

The cross is made of horseshoe nails and probably very recent.

I doubt that it's any angel in particular.

All you have to do to get its wings back is ring a bell. It says so in the movies.

Don't you have to have a pure soul as well? Not that I'm saying opoe doesn't, not at all.

Many images of the Archangel Gabriel show him/her using both hands to hold the lilies.

Could very well be, Bev! Maybe I should get some fake but very well done lilies for him to hold....see how that looks on him...
I will not get my hopes up then...;)
