Hello all, I'd love any info to help identify this doll and her age. I think she is modern based on her shoes which appear to be a type of plastic and their soles made of paper (and falling apart). Her head is painted ceramic. Body is stuffed and, as you can see, no great detail on her hands. Her joints work. There is some sort of protrusion at the base of her neck underneath her shirt(?) She has a small chip on her chin and has been out sitting on a shelf unprotected and pretty dusty. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the mish-mash...for some reason these images posted out of order and cut into the text. I'm out of practice.

Could she be Russian by the way she is dressed?

The body & clothes seem to be a home project. The head purchased to complete the doll. It also appears to have hand painted features.

The protrusion might be a crack/break in the shoulders?

Condition is not good. I would say maybe a collectible to those from the Country she represents....................but quite inexpensively.............

She does appear to be a costume doll. But I see commercially-produced rather than home made. Eastern European, I'd think. And given her makeup and plastic shoes... 1930s-1950s.

Thank you all, this is so very helpful - especially the Etsy find, Debora!! This looks to be exactly it with different hair & makeup and skirt. So, seems from a kit, each maker adding their own special touch & flair resulting in a unique piece of their own. From the little I know, the owner did sew/embroider, so this being one of her projects when young is most likely! Thanks again for puzzling this together with me!

JMO but... No, kit. We're talking Hungary, likely (given her makeup and plastic shoes) during the post-war Communist period. People were poor, poor and there would have been no consumer goods much less money to buy them with. These were probably sold in a government-owned handicraft store for purchase by the few visitors who traveled there during those years.
