Hello everyone, this is my first post so I would like to introduce myself. My name is Josh and I'm 27 from Arkansas. There have been several times I've came across this site while looking for information on things and I've already learned a lot on here. Now I hope to become more engaged.

I've been around antiques and flea markets all of my life but how I got started in this business is a bit more complicated. Up until 3 years ago I worked on cattle farms and did agriculture construction. Then one day at work I injured my leg and could no longer do the manual labor required. I've always been a big reader so after my injury and with more time to read I would buy books at yard sales and flea markets. Soon I figured out I could find books pretty cheap and resale them online. After that I also started going to auctions and doing the same with antiques.

It has been quite a journey to this point but it's something I very much enjoy and can actually do while being on crutches. Things I collect are books, metal fans, coins, branding irons, primitives, pottery and antiques related to Arkansas and the South.

Thank you all for reading along. I already have tons of questions about different items I've acquired and look forward to learning from you all and helping others with the things I know about.

Yes welcome to the board. It's nice to see younger people taking an interest.
Ask as many questions as you like - we like to share what we've learned.

There is also a sister board you might enjoy.

    Welcome to the forum, Josh.
Very sorry to hear about your accident. So good that you already had other interests that you can now delve into. It really helps with the process of coping and accepting.
And reading is great, it broadens your horizon. As a child I was sick a lot and raided my parent's book collection to pass the time in that boring bed. It was the start of my interest in different art styles, history, mythology, philosophy. Knowledge I still use today.

Looking forward to your questions and your insights.

Thanks for the love and gracious welcome! I actually just now got back from an auction. Some of the things I got were a metal Eskimo fan, stack of records, table top knife grinder, 6 pieces of enamelware, cotton scale with pea, a $3 box of Pfaltzgraff (don't judge lol), old boxing gloves, bee hive smoker, a Kill-Ko glass sprayer and other miscellaneous.

I'll see about posting some photos of this later. What is the policy regarding asking for values on things? Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the forum! I enjoy estate auctions as well.

Pricing is difficult but some of the members here can often offer a ballpark value.

    You can ask.
Many won't give pricing. Too many variables. Different parts of the country, rural vs city, where you are selling - ebay, craigslist, antique mall, etc,

So if you ask and don't get a response, don't take it personally.

Hi and WELCOME @Josh.in.Ark!! I know it's a bad pun, but sounds like you fell into a new livelihood!!!! Best of luck with it all!! As 'Cluttered' indicated....too many variables usually to give prices although some may indicate what something may sell for near them. Your best shot might be to look on Ebay.com at the SOLD listings for decent ranges....something that's already sold is a better indicator than something that you can only see an ASKING price for.....sounds like you're already having fun with it, so you're good to go!!!!!:):):)

    Welcome Josh!

Just wanted to add onto what clutteredcloset said about value of an item - ebay is a pretty good source to find what price an item will fetch. Search for your item on ebay and then click the "sold" box on the left side of the page. Obviously if you think you've found something really rare or special, ebay may not be your go-to place to find a value. But in cased like that, someone here can probably direct you where else to look.
