At that size I'd almost call it a cordial, not a wine cup

A cordial, by definition holds between 1 and 1 1/2 ounces.
My question is "when did a stemmed piece without a handle become a "cup?" No reflection on the OP, I've seen this enough recently that it seems almost common. Cups sit on saucers and have handles. Don't they?
