    hey folks

something else i bought at the boot. not exactly cheap, but worth the money i thought (£25), not bad size either

something i might wear for a while

was wondering what kind of amber it might be, and if it has any age

the string is red and loosely fibrous, ethinicy ?

    any thoughts or info appreciated

    i loves it

Cut and faceted amber with a bit of age to it. Clasp may be gold.

Cool thanks obb, that's good news. my first boot sale in over a year

Every stall had absolute rubbish, apart from 1, a lovely old couple selling great things at reasonable prices to finance their move to turkey(yeah, I'm all chatterer:))

Agree, had one very similar recently, clasp was gold plated on mine, I suspected it was 1930's to 50's. Sold for quite a bit more than you bought yours for.

    That is very nice!
Have you looked at the clasp with a loupe as it does look like it could be gold.
Even I would have been persuaded to part with the cash for that!

Thanks ksw, yeah no marks I can see, will probably test it though if I decide to sell it

Yeah I'm getting worryingly more flash with the cash than I used to be, have to be nowadays.

But this did seem worth it

Me too but I think (hope) I have more knowledge now as to an items potential value. If I’m not pretty sure I stay in the under £5 category!

A bit of scrutinisation and a uv torch go a long way :)

Good thing is I'm not buying so much iffy stuff anymore, I seem to be putting a lot more things back nowadays after learning more

Me too. Things I would have bought a couple of years ago I wouldn’t now although I’ve enjoyed researching it, learned from it all and sold most of the less exciting stuff on.
Ok, I have to admit I’ve kept far too much good stuff in the hoard but it’s not going to lose value. Might need an extension though………

I would not bet on losing value. Royal Doulton figurines are at almost giveaway prices. There is a UK youtube channel called Storage Hoarders Only Human. One of the saddest was a man who had collected and paid storage fees for 20 years. What was trending when he bought and stored it was no longer in demand. However, hold on to the stuff long enough and it will come back around.

Is the "blue" pic UV? How did you do that and why? I am new at this:happy:

I think I’m pretty safe with precious metals and gemstones.

Real amber will fluoresce under UV light so it’s a good test and always great to keep a small UV flashlight with you when picking. I always have a loupe and a pen UV flashlight in my Fanny pack just in case!

Appreciate the info on determining real amber of which I know nothing. :)

My answer was a generalization, not directed to your amber necklace. Here in the US, many Boomers are downsizing, relatives are having estate sales, or items end up online auctions. As the intent is often just to get rid of "stuff", research has not been done as to current value. For the knowledgeable, this is a good time to buy. But sadly, in the end, the value is only what you sold it for unless you are planning to open a museum.
