    Hello fellow antiquers! DSC09466.JPG

I just acquired an amazing vintage/antique toy. It is a beautiful and unique tiger nodder!

The toy appears to be paper mache with a soft texture (not flocked). I know of a putzz elephant with the same texture and in my research I found cotton was used with the paper mache. I'm not sure about this - if anyone has any knowledge on the technique used to create a soft, hide-like fur on top of paper mache please share. That might be a clue to help figure out more about the tiger.

I believe the eyes are glass but I've never been too good at judging eye material.

The tiger is holding some sort of critter in its mouth (sheep?)

    The nodder is 5" long.

I'm not sure whether the tail was added or if it is original. It is a painted spring and it is about 7" long. The painton the tail matches the color of the hide very well.

I hope you enjoyed this tiger!
I'm currently researching the toy if anyone would care to join the hunt!
Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

The critter looks like a guinea pig. Probably isn't. It could be a giant guinea pig, or a tiny tiger.
    Maybe a capibara?

But then the tiger would have to be a jaguar.

I vote that the thing in its mouth is a capribara! The funny thing is my mother commented that it looked like a guinea pig too! My memory was brought back to this:

This is a 1930s paper mache nodder. The person who originally listed it called it a "tiger" but I think it more closely resembles a lion. Regardless, this could be a predcessor to my tiger toy which gave inspiration?

Does anyone have an opinion on the original tiger posted - Japanese or German?

The other one says it’s a rodent in mouth.
I was pretending it was merely carrying a cub only because it’s more pleasant. :playful:

    Hunting, it is a cub.:cat:
Forget about sheep, rodents, capibaras (also rodents). Everybody is mistaken. It is a cub, definitely, no doubt about it.:playful:

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

The ears look odd for a tiger cub, but... I prefer that solution!

Agree about the ears, but I will pretend ignorance and be happy!

I'm going to send some pictures of our mama and baby off to Bertoia Auctions and Morphy Auctions. Maybe the toy people there can give some information. I will update when I hear a reply.

Jason, can you show a picture of the bottom, please? Does it have some weight to it or is it light?

    The nodder is very light.

I'll be in my studio today taking shots of toys - I'll have a photo of the bottom of the tiger up this afternoon.

E2A407D3-0366-4272-A815-C21DE4DC5C92.jpeg This reminded me of yours, somewhat, but it is mechanical, that’s why I asked about weight. But this one is French, so I’m wondering if that’s also a possibility.

    Thank you for the image.
I'm trying to figure out the technique and material used for the tiger.
The tiger in the above photo is hide covered.
My tiger is definitely a paper mache base but it is as if some sort of soft material was pasted over to mat it down but it maintinas a soft "feathery" like feeling when touched.

I have an elephant with the exact same texture and found a listing for the elephant that mentioned "cotton" paper mache.

Does anyone know about that technique?
