Am I a camellia? Where did I come from?

The top flower in this book plate is clearly a rose. Is the bottom one a camellia? I'm not familiar with camellias, but based on Googling, it looks like one to me.

Also, I know this is a 19th century illustration from a book, but have been unable to find the book even using Google image search. If by a remote chance anyone thinks they've seen this image before, I'd be grateful for the info.

Pat, I think maybe it's supposed to be another rose... It seems to have the same kind of leaves and perhaps even be on the same stem as the other one (and the buds)

Thanks, SBSVC. You may be right about it being a rose... there do seem to be some roses with that kind of a look. I think the leaves are different, though.

Nope - same rose. That's how that one looks when it is fully opened. The name of the artist is somewhere in my little gray cells... ?Thinking...thinking...

Thanks, Silver. It's a pretty flower... I'd enjoy having roses that looked like that.

Got it! Pierre Joseph Redoute. (accent / over the last 'e.')

Look his stuff up on eBay. :)

Are those what they used to call cottage roses? I'm just imagining them blooming in great profusion just outside the door - and scenting the air with that delightful, real rose scent that I remember from my grandpa's roses when I was a kid... (as opposed to the unscented varieties out there now - and that awful, totally FAKE scent that they call "rose" today! Lately, I seem to encounter somebody wearing that scent - OR the scent of fake lavender - every time I get on an elevator!)

Nope, tisn't Redoute, whose work I'm familiar with.

It does look like James Andrews book illustrations, but his usually are signed with his initials.

Nothing to apologize for! I've become quite the night owl lately. Getting weary now, though and will probably hit the sack soon.

I'm looking in babel.hathitrust.org at different volumes of a journal that James Andrews illustrated. I love that site... it's wonderful for scanning through a book for the illustrations. :)

Oh, silver, I wish I knew! Is this what "old age" does to us?

Google on David Austin Roses. A British grower who has reintroduced traditional scented roses like this.
