Maybe one of my Canadian friends can clarify for me if alligators live there... I found this guy for not too terribly much today. It's in good shape. And, amazingly, I think it's labeled correctly: "Old Nootka... Vancouver Island... Bear Grass" So what's the animal? 8.5 cm across (3") Thanks!!
Maybe Gonakadet--- the sea wolf? That would make more sense, but maybe it doesn't fit regionally? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonakadet
Ya gotta luv it when a fricken tag on an antique item.....is actually correct !!! Wait...What....u got Canadian friends ?? Nice find !!! Circa 1915....give or take a few years..... Nootka cedar and dyed bear grass trinket basket. Now, about the critter...... long snout fluffy upturned ears paws thick furry body big fluffy tail I'd say a Wolf ...
A Sea Wolf would have more whale like qualities ...! but............ GOOD GUESS....... for one of my Yankee pals !!
Let's go! Thanks for the comments. I wouldn't have thought that old but I'm excited to hear it. Wolf makes sense... except the short legs threw me off. I guess the weaver had space limitations that could have affected the image.
NWC creatures , can be identified with less than full body images..... here the legs are only important in that they are there as paws, and not flippers or fins . if they were not present at all......then the creature would likely be a serpent...
I echo Komo-you nailed it Pott, beautiful & vintage ! PS-It looks minty for 110 years old,def got the right light nut brown color.
They call them alligators for good reason. Sometimes the tread peels off of a truck tire and goes flying.
