    Any reference of this artist's work ? Has 'ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO' stamp, dated 1937. s-l1600 - 2023-06-07T165640.555.jpg s-l1600 - 2023-06-07T165723.538.jpg s-l1600 - 2023-06-07T165758.004.jpg s-l1600 - 2023-06-07T170026.392.jpg

Apparently a student taking classes at the art institute.

Obviously my link wasn't a link at all, but search the name and you will find an Art Institute archive link with the title "james" that leads to a PDF download of an exhibit by the James Nelson Raymond Classes: Young Chicago Art. The catalog is from 1942.

He would have done that as a kid. Born in 1921 or 1922. Father Lithuanian and Mother Polish. Four years of high school. Attended Art Institute class for scholarship students. Enlisted in the Army 1942. Listed occupation as "commercial artist." Returned to U.S. 1945.

Entirely reasonable that he would have gone on to be a commercial artist, most of whom are staunchly anonymous.

Yes, those old commercial guys. Their skills were impressive. And all pre-computer.

For a teenager, he had a diversity of styles - another of his works from the same lot. s-l1600 - 2023-06-06T204646.455.jpg

15 or 16 and he was painting school girls with garters. But what's really audacious about that work is his use of linear perspective. That's a very sophisticated layout and well executed.

Found something else. The Illinois Art Project was part of the WPA. But he seems to have disappeared after he came back from the war.
