Featured Age and style of old brooch?

I recently acquired this brooch but the style is unfamiliar to me. The c clasp and tube hinge (is that what it's called?) on the back seems to indicate it's old, but I've not seen a brooch before with the stone sort of sitting on top of it like that rather than set into it. The stone seems to be an amethyst and there are no stamps or markings of any kind on the metal. It's very detailed, particularly the leaves shapes, which is what attracted me to it. Some of the smallest details were hard to catch with the camera. Measures about 2 inches wide.

Any ideas what this style might be called, if it has a name, and what period it could belong to? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much for any insight you can offer!

I've seen things set that way before, but they've all been glass. Margarita rhinestones are shaped like flowers and have holes in the center. The setting is odd if it's precious metal, and just a bit unusual if it isn't. If it's American or British anyway; things made in other places can get a little eccentric.

 

Agree, this kind of setting through the stone is rather indicative of a cut glass/paste/crystal stone. It seems the metal is pinchbeck, a zinc and copper alloy, formed by stamping.
Gold testing will say

A bit on the small side, but strikes me as similar to a sash pin.

That is so interesting! I thought the pin through the stone was strange too, it makes sense it would be glass then. I got it in the UK.
