African? Ebony? Carved Oval Bowl; Heavy!

It's ~12 3/8" x ~6 3/8" x ~1 7/8"; weight is ~15.5 oz.
I hadn't noticed the red showing on it 'til I edited the pics...an' don't know if Ebony has that hue. Nor do I have any specific reason for picking Africa as an origin, save for the treatment of the foot...which may be weak. When held in my palm an' tapped with a fingernail it rings like medium-fired ceramic. It is smoothly finished inside an' out, & quite uniformly shaped. I've no recollection of where or when it was acquired.
Not much help, I realize...but here it is, an' I'm hoping for some of you to be much better informed about what it may be than I.
