This crabbed letter was written a year before his death.

I can make out Lieber, then I get stuck!

It looks like Lieber Herr Doktor...

The rest will take some time.

    Lieber herr Doktor,

Ich hätte …. schon auf ihren liebenswürdigen Brief geantwortet er traf …. aber gerade in einer

    Dear doctor,

I would have answered your amiable/lovely letter sooner but it arrived just at the moment.....
(I wish Adolf had typed his letter:()

I don't see London, France (Frankreich) or Frankfurt, but I do see Tübingen, a famous university town. The doctor could have been a doctor at the university.

Thanks Bev, now I see it. It says "Hamburg und Frankfurt".
I also see now that Adolf is writing from Rostock, a town not far from the Baltic Sea. He was born in Rostock in 1837 and returned there from Vienna in 1887.
I will give the rest of the letter a go in bits and pieces, attention difficulties.

It ties in that he is somebody noteworthy, nearly all the letters are from/to famous people

He is very famous in the German speaking world. He was a director of the Hofburg theatre in Vienna and a writer and translator. He translated Greek tragedies and several Shakespeare plays into German. The king of Bavaria gave him a title, like a knighthood. When he went back to Rostock, it was to dedicate the rest of his life to writing.
Here is something on Adolf, in English:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Wilbrandt

I only wish his handwriting was more legible, I can read bits and pieces but not enough to make a coherent translation. It is clear to me however, that he was very fond of the Doctor he wrote to, and he writes about people they both know. It is all pretty mundane, written in a very friendly way.
The sentence about Tübingen (second page) reads:
Am 21. fahre ich nach Tübingen, in groβer Vorfreude. (The 21st I will travel to Tübingen, really looking forward.)

Here is some more info, in German, the 'English' button does not translate this particular page, so you will have to try Google translate, or something.
