The painting is about 10 x 12 in a 19 x 21.5 frame. First 2 photos framed, the rest taken unframed. I showed it framed to someone who knows something about art and they thought it might be charcoal or charcoal pencil with a watercolor wash background. Unframed it looks and feels like paint.

It is signed Greene and online research led me to Stephen Greene, a known abstract artist. Signature looks similar to the ones in the links below, some more than others. I sent an inquiry to Bonhams,
who replied with a not interested. I then sent an inquiry to Rago, who did not reply. So if it is by Stephen Greene, probably not hugely valuable. Still, I would like to know if it is by Stephen Greene before selling it. Also, what kind of paint do you think it is?

Thank you for any comments or help.

Looks like charcoal with a watercolor wash on deckle edge watercolor paper.Hold it over a lamp, you should be able to detect a watermark on the paper.
PS-Slight possibility a WC wash on black stone litho- but doubtful with all the pigment smearing on reverse.

My pleasure. It doesn't resemble the $800-3K listed Stephen Greene.Whoever did it-it's a strong piece, and strong of course doesn't have to be pretty.
PS-By the way,the piece below is a painting by Max Ernst at the Tate Modern,London.

More and more im into Surrealism. For some reason this reminds me of an animated clip I saw many years ago ,who knows where .

Thank you Debora. A telling comparison, very different. It was this signature that made me ask the question. Different last letter e, but the rest seemed similar to me.

Johnny, Bosko, not sure if I "like" this painting or not, but I do find it interesting to look at.
