    Hi,

    Here is a painting i came across a while back. JPEG_20240116_235052_resize_89.jpg 20240116_233828_resize_40.jpg 20240116_233802_resize_0.jpg 20240116_233752_resize_49.jpg 20240116_233742_resize_98.jpg 20240116_233735_resize_0.jpg

There is no clear visable signature.

What you think. Thank you for all opinions

Much too realistic to be considered abstract, JMHO :)

That's nice. Shame it's not signed. Could a signature be hidden by the frame?

I'd peel of the paper tape on the back for potential information.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

For me, I think there might be a signature LOWER RIGHT CORNER, but that's also not saying it's very readable.....sorry....

I see a modernist piece of a dry docked ship - tones look 1960's and the reverse looks 50-60 years old as well.

    Thank you Drew.

Im certainly no expert on art but this caught my eye. i picked this painting up because the colours looked attractive and it looked different to most other paintings id come across.

I like it anyway but are modernist paintings collectable?

    Thank you

Sure, plenty of people collect modernist paintings. If it dates to the mid 20th century, it would be considered a 'period' piece (1940s-70s). Most important - you found an original piece of artwork that you like !

I dont know if there might be a signature hidden by the frame or as Roaring 20s sugested that there might be information hidden behind tape at back.

Would removing the tape at back or indeed the frame not damage the painting in some way?might just research similar artworks now ye have so kindly educated me a little more.

    Thank you all

That looks like masking tape so it will probably flake away as you get going. Tape removal won't hurt canvas or wood anymore than it already is. Many tapes have acids that actually damage art so I'd remove it anyway. You shouldn't need to replace it. It may be what is holding the painting into it's frame. In which case, the proper method is to use non-acidic archival tape on the interior of the wood frame, to prevent acid from coming from the wood into the art (many people skip this step...up to you for longevity). Then buy off-sets at your hardware store. You can also use nails or staples, if you feel comfortable.
