I purchased this at an antique shop in the small town where I live. It is drawn on the back of some sort of printed document, letterpress I think. It is not signed. It has been laid down to a piece of black paper like this construction paper. I can see 3 distinct character sizes and the body of the document appears to be in all caps. It is possible it is typed on stationary. The paper is slightly smaller than standard 8 1/2" by 11", about an 1/8 shorter each way. The drawing is done in graphite. I did some research on the poster board and it looks like it was used a lot in the 1960's. I suspect that is when it was framed. I was hoping that folks could take a look and make comments as to elements that might help me to identify age and if the style of the drawing (ie. hand of the artist) looks in anyway familiar. I was also hoping someone could work some magic on the photos of the embossed letters, maybe flip (mirror image) and highlight? Any comments appreciated.

Sweet little pencil sketches. Do you think both of same woman? One in youth perhaps done from photograph? And the other in old age done from life?

My gut feeling is that it is the same person, if not, maybe a daughter. Being that it is not signed, maybe a working sketch for another another piece.

Neither one of these appear to have been copied from a photograph.
They each appear to have been done from real life. Less time, perhaps less interest, was spent by the artist to draw the younger girl. The fact of no strong dark hues makes it appear it was done only with a Number 2 pencil. It's done by a good artist, probably not a famous one though.

Oh, and I should mention that if ONE was copied from a photograph, it would be the top younger one, as mentioned by Debora.

I went to art school and have worked in an office all my life because for a long time I was a single Mom with 3 kids. At the tender age of 74 I'm finally getting back to working in my chosen passion. To me, this looks like some of the sketches my friend Annie & I did back in the day. We used to ride on the subway and sketch passengers.

Here's a pastel sketch of one of our roommates sleeping from about 1967. The other one is a recent colored pencil painting (not called drawings) of a mountain gorge.
