    Possibly the ridges in your little plate are to aid in drainage. As from a nice frosty wine bottle which would otherwise leak all over Milord's nice chinos.

    Rontgen's book of marks show these as makers using a mark like that if it helps in finding its original purpose. Does sound about the size of a bottle coaster I think.
