I have this chamber stick with a few things I'm trying to figure out. It's Sheffield electro plated Hawksworth Eyre & Co I believe and heavily used.

First, does this have a name? I've found a few online but they didn't have specific keywords, is it a storm candle stick maybe?

I'm guessing there is probably a missing glass shade judging from the rim on the interior, does that seem right? And final question, the snuffer is fixed to the side. How does one use it or would there be a loose snuffer that sits on this fixed piece?

Goodness that's a lot of questions:rolleyes:. Thank you!

I'd say the snuffer detaches ....( stuck with age ?? ) and a glass would likely have been present.
If the snuffer is solid, does the candle stick come out ?
It's very nice and you could polish it up so it gleams like it should.

The snuffer appears to be welded in place so I'm guessing it must have had something like this one I just found though the shade would have to be different as the fitting is different.

I will give it a polish, I do love sparkly silver.

Oops, just found this one with what must be the type of shade I'm missing. I still don't see any keywords that describe it other than pierced.

Should have added that the brass label on the HE & Co. chamberstick was BRIGHT & CO (LATE) ARGAND. I'm not familiar with that company; however, they seemed to be involved with lamp making or/and brass makers. Does your chamberstick have that label on the bottom ir any visible brass?

    Hi Susan,
No brass label or brass anywhere on it, just silver over copper with the number 7996.

Hold on!!! That Bright label on that other supposed chamberstick, their shape and that useless snuffer have bothered me. I Have now searched around to finally realized that the brass label reads Bright & Argand!! I had mistakenly thought it was saying Arcand. Argand is a type of lamp!!! These candlesticks may be part of an Argand lamp with Hawksworth, Eyre & Co. makers of the silver parts.

I'll have to search around for more info because I'm not tyat familiar with Argand lamps.

Hmmm.... Okay, with no such label on yours, scratch the Argand lamp theory. Gosh, I'm still bothered with the useless snuffer. That other one with the Argand label is probably part of an Argand lamp with a purely decorative snuffer.

I'm just guessing that there should be a snuffer that sits on the snuffer shaped holder. All my snuffers have a long handle on the side so I can't really test it but if one had a handle going straight up that would work I think.

I'm thinking that when I go back to where I found this chamberstick I'll look to see if a snuffer or a chimney that got separated are floating around somewhere (not too likely but worth a look).

So you are walking through the house at night snuffing all the candles as you don't want the place to burn down. How do you make it to bed without falling down if everything is snuffed?

I say what you have is a candle snuffer permanently fixed to the chamber stick so you can see what you are doing and then make it to bed without breaking a leg.

Hold, folks. Firstly, that is not a a proper chamber stick.

If you recall (from Shakespeare?), "I will light thee to thy bed, Milady," Milord is not going to bat about the house carrying glass, and hot glass to boot. Dangerous for everyone!

Chamber sticks sat on the hall table and were either made of metal and looked rather like an upright scoop with the handle on the side, or they could be regular candle sticks made of metal or wood. In the first case, the lit candle smoke would be wafted back onto the tall side of the piece. If the second, one's chest took the blowback as a hand was held in front of the flame.

SIS's candle holder, while certainly made to be moved, is meant to proceed from the sideboard to the dining table, or the mantel to a side table, etc.

    :)

Sis, no doubt you are right on only a snuffer stand/holder. A straight up long handled snuffer would be right for a chamberstick like this one if it had a tall glass insert. The chambersticks I have and have seen were ones without handles of any length that hooked on to the sides of the chambersticks.

I found a pierce/reticulated chamberstick on a dedicated chamberstick website. It doesn't have a snuffer, but the overall design is similar. You might be interested in the description given. BTW, the site erroneously IDed the metal and the date. They called it sterling using the markings of the metal for location and dating. The markings are: crown, prince-of-wales feathers, P, G, S. PGS is a generic marking for Plated German Silver.

Ah so not so much a "chamber" stick as a moveable hurricane candle. Any idea when the mark dates? I've looked but all I really can say is it's probably before WWI.
