Pulled out the Model 98 Mauser today for some oiling - serial # 3287? - took pics so if anybody has info it would be fantastically appreciated! The only thing I know is that My Father used this gun to deer hunt (I'm with you, I can't imagine shooting a deer - I think that's horrible?) but when he met my Mom she stopped that - LOL!! So anyhow, he was in WWII and I was wondering if this was an actuall German Mauser used in the war or just a crate gun surpluss! It doesn't have the bayonet or sling - and the wood is in really good shape so I'm guessing NOT war related but still, if somebody wanted to go deer hunting, why would they pick this rifle? Oh, well, that's why I'm asking.is it a trademark???? Or just pitting?

Here's pics and the last pic 000_9641.jpg 000_9643.jpg 000_9644.jpg 000_9649.jpg is a trademark???? Or just pitting?

They were sold cheaply in huge numbers on the surplus market

Yes - I know that - a few years ago I could have bought a wooden case of them for around 800$, The question IS : not how common but what time period is this and my father is 95 and he told me he had this since he came back from WWII - He's not doing well now and could be I'd like to find out about this since he is "day to day"

Looks like a 45 next to the BYF that would be the year. Need better pics of the forearm area, butt area and any other marks. Its unusual to still have the cover on the front site and the wood looks like its in good condition. This may have been a bring back but you would normally find the front forearm wood cut under the front band ( called a duffle bag cut as the soldier would have to make it fit in his duffle) Its not a Russian capture which was heavily imported here as there is no x under the model 98. That would be 8 mm and is a fine rifle.( I have 3) Values are really based on condition and markings so more pics would help.
The small mark is known as a waffenamt (not sure of spelling offhand) and is an inspection mark.
