I got these four last week at the same place I got that filthy little painting. I especially like the bead people. Anything special?

You don't need me to tell you that the first cameo necklace is much nicer than the second. First is cut in conch shell, depicts Psyche. Looks like a karat marking on the back of the bail? Lavaliere with a baby's tooth pearl dangle. Any mark on the clasp of the chain?

Afraid the rather pretty silver mount of second one does not offset the crude helmet shell cameo.

    Both could be from 1930s.

Thank you Bronwen. Yes - on the bail it looks like 10 K. There are three letters or numbers on the clasp of the chain but I can't make them out.

585 maybe? That is 14k gold.

    A popular style:

Most sources put these earlier than I did, to the Edwardian period. Still think 30s for the other.

    Pretty finds, Bookahtoo:)
The pearl pendant on the pic#1 cameo is a river pearl, maybe Mississippi. 1910/1915 "Edwardian". The "ball" on the sping clasp says same. Color of 14k gold by my sniffing detector;).
Second one a tad later, 1920s, wrongly usually called "filigree":)
The enamel horse is cute! Same, "filigree", 1920s.
The glass pearls dancers are so whimsical, about same era, love them!!!:joyful:

If it is a Mississippi River pearl, value of pendant just took a leap. Ones of any size are shockingly expensive.

It looks like the clasp is marked 9ct.
Why is some gold marked with K and some with ct, and does that mean this isn't the original chain?

How can you tell if it's a Mississippi River pearl?

That was more hypothetical. I don't know of any way that wouldn't involve a lot of money & the destruction of the pearl. I only know any of this because when I bought a cameo brooch that was missing one pearl, Mississippi River pearls looked like the best bet for finding something that would work with the others.

Buying the pearl & having a jeweller install it cost nearly half what the brooch cost. (OK, I admit I paid an obscenely low price for the brooch.)

You can find similar pearls listed as dogtooth pearls too, and those might work too. That's what's on the necklace. Nine K is British, hence the Ct mark, and they wouldn't have had the Mississippi or Tennessee pearls.

I like the necklaces with the horsie and the dollies the best. That second cameo ... what did that poor mollusk do to end up being treated like that?

If it's marked ct or carat, then British. K or Karat or KT, American or some other country which can't spell. ;) 585 and other content numbers can also be British, but is also common on European pieces.

Pearls were one of the compensations early European explorers of the Americas found for the lack of gold. They became a big export. Which doesn't guarantee anything about the dangle on the necklace, but a North American pearl can't be ruled out either.
