    KIMG0184.JPG KIMG0185.JPG KIMG0186.JPG this may not be an antique at all. Can anyone please tell me what this is, what it is used for? Thank You.

    Welcome to our forum!!! :happy::happy::happy::happy:

    Just a SWAG - it is a candle of sorts with a hurricane shade. You would put some oil in the tube thing along with a wick that dangled into the oil. You then have a candle burning with no wax mess.

    Welcome! Think bercrystal is absolutely right. Suspect the open book is meant to be a Bible & that your piece is likely to be an actual antique. There was a fad for oil lamps in the 1970s, but made in the more common way, with a metal fitting that held the wick & allowed it to be rolled up as it burned down. Also think the simple inspirational motif on the shade is not likely to be one chosen for reproduction.

    It occurs to me that the red color may not just be a matter of preferences in decor. Churches often have a red lamp that is lit all the time, even when all other lights are off. A practice deriving from Jewish tradition, you can read more on Wiki. This was probably for home use. Could be that lamp sat next to one of those big family Bibles people used to have.

    Candles would have been unsuitable for this purpose as they do not burn as long. They also cost more than oil.

    Love seeing things like this that are no longer made. Thanks.

    The reason I did not think it was old is I think I see a rubber piece at the bottom of the candleholder.

    Could this possibly be from something like Princess House that did the home party thing back in the 1970's?

    My first thought on the motif was Jewish.
