20th big japanese tile

    hi folks

    ive had this big ceramic tile for years, but never bothered trying to sell it as im presuming quite modern

    dug it out the other day, and thought it actually isnt that bad, looks all hand made, glazed

    cant find any like it online

    is the image based on a particular japanese artist?, swear ive seen images like it before

    any help would be magic

    Thanks Bronwen, I think that's who's art I had in mind.

    I think it's probably someone copying his style then

    Very similar in the way the lips are painted etc

    According to the internet, it is an Utamaro. One of his 'mosquito net' woodblocks. With some license as to the colorway. That said... Can't find the original.

    I think that may be a modern copy of an original. But good enough for our purposes.
