There seems to be a lot of variations and names of similar Mid Eastern/Asian violins. Any help narrowing down the country and the exact type?
    Thanks

In China, a variation of this instrument has been known for centuries, and is called an "Erhu" ("Er = 2" "Hu = Strings". So literally 'Two Strings'). It's one of the traditional instruments associated with Chinese music.

Thanks for the replies. I found many variations from Turkey, India, Egypt, Iran, China, Vietnam .... probably every single country in Middle East, Asia and Northen Africa have their own example.

I sold one of these a few years ago and it did very well.

As mentioned, this is similar to the Chinese erhu, but I'd guess it is from some other country, such as Vietnam, Laos, that part of the world. But similar bowed instruments are found in quite a few countries. Not really a violin, though it is a bowed instrument.
Like the one in Gila's photo it appears to have a body made from a gourd (or possibly a coconut).
However, Gila's is a 5-string fretless banjo, plucked not bowed. That one looks to be much better quality than the two-string bowed instrument, and I'd not be surprised if Gila's was American-made; there are a number of US craftsmen who make 5-string banjos based on instruments believed to have been brought to the US from Africa centuries ago.
Those luthier-made banjos sometimes sell in the $2,000 range, new; Based on the apparent quality, I'd guess that the 2-string bowed instrument shown was made for import sales, though it may well be playable; I'd be surprised if one could get more than $100-$150 for it.

    Thanks, Fakesie.
    That really ties everything together.
Now if the subject of erhus/etc would just come up in a casual conversation at a party, I'd be very impressive.
