Pair of 2 Japanese Candlesticks (Shokudai). Both abt 24 1/2" tall, formed brass, copper, bronze (?).The first was found in Kyoto ($180),the second found about 3 years later at a local Goodwill ($3.00).
Those were the legendary days at Goodwill -and why we went.
    PS-Sorry with the atrocious photos.

Japanese Warosoku candles. They're made by heating mokuro (Japan tallow) extracted from sumac nuts to melt, manually pouring it around a wick made of washi Japanese paper or rush, and standing the product to dry. The section of a finished Warosoku shows an annual ring-like pattern.
We lit them ONCE (I beleive they were $15-20 each !),they produce no smoke-very Zen.
Couldn't resist that shape.Being frugal,I tried to carve my own with a butcher knife....not so good.

Whit-If You do however attempt to use cheaper candles,it will take You longer to achieve Bhuddahood.Course,if You figure everything's eternal, what's the hurry ?

Pics of my Shokudai will be in Metalware one of these fine days, with a flag to you.
Your two appear to be nearly identical. Mine, not so much...but it was sold without the Japanese noun. I had to ferret that out of Mother Web, which was a real trip!

Mine look like 2 long lost brothers, but one has a slightly redder patina and the base is very slightly diff than the other-the do look pretty harmonious though perched on the dresser.Boy the stuff we used to find at Goodwill-they must've thought it was from some mall home decor store, but there's a good chance ours were made during the Japanese Meiji period.
