I tested these with my silver testing kit (scratch on the stone w/18K acid, nice white blue mark that did not dissipate) so thought these tested positive as (sterling) silver, but thinking at least one must be coin silver. Looking up J&W Moir pieces, seems like most are coin. Thoughts on the test? My 18K acid is what I normally use, but now seeing that it could give a slightly misleading result. I'm wondering if both are coin. They have the same monogram (on the back of the spoon with the "D" is the same as the front of the other spoon.)

I'm also wondering what to call the larger J & W Moir spoon that has sort of a scalloped bowl.

Also haven't quite narrowed down the maker on the spoon with the "D". The mark is J. __(?) Wood.

    Here are the two, pre-polish:

The back of the Wood spoon... anyone recognize maker?

What to call this shape on the Moir one:

    Thanks!

The shape of the bowl on the second one is a "shell" - so it's perhaps a "sugar shell."

Sugar shell, that's it. Thank you Bakers. :)

Any idea on the maker of the one marked J. __? Wood? I thought it would be easy to find but I can't seem to ID it.

Classic 'Prince Albert' pattern, mid 19th century coin, which as said, could vary, sometimes quite low fineness, but could also be higher than typical (the Stamping Act of 1906 defined 'Coin' as at least .900). The maker of the 'J.E. Wood' spoon would be Jabez Ebenezer Wood of New York (edit: NYC and Philadelphia).

Thanks for taking a look. Glad to have the ID on the 2nd one.

Also, very good info on the coin silver.

Thank you Bakers and Dragonfly! :)

WEV's site shows the Moirs as jewelers and watchmakers, so they were more likely retailers (not that it really makes any difference, standard pattern, made by many):

I've got some Moir cutlery, big forks and table spoons, sold to me as plate back years ago but IIRC my research at the time eliminated them being plate as Moir was working before Elkington got the plating thing going ...anyway, my Moir stuff is marked J&W MOIR with a fish, crown and lion (?) passant, a la pseudo Brit hallmarks -and I think they tested out as silver not plate.
Was a while back though so take my failing memories with a grain of salt, OK? :oldman:
