Does anybody recognize this handsome old guy, or the painter?

I bought this painting, in this condition, about 50 years ago at an auction held on an estate in Boston.

    Thank you!

Of no help, just admiring your painting. Pretty neat you’ve held onto him for 50 years. Is there a signature I’m not seeing? More knowledgeable ones will be along soon. Welcome to Antiquers!

Unfortunately, there's really nothing to distinguish him from other respectable men of his era. Title of book legible on spine? Any clues on back of painting?

Yes, sometimes the painter will hide clues. The writing on the book or the bit on the watch chain would be good places to look. It is a fairly well done portrait, the best place to check the skill of the artist is in the hands. Unfortunately you have a lot of damage and it would be expensive to fix. I think it would look best as part of the decor in a stately vintage home. I will do some digging and look for artists that were doing portraits in Boston.

Semi-precious stone with Intaglio design swivel fob. Not uncommon. Design might offer cues if legible.

Speaking of restoration, and somewhat OT; but there are some rather enjoyable youtube videos from Baumgartner Restoration, illustrating the process of painting restoration. It is fascinating and astonishing to watch the process, and he apparently can repair anything, and could certainly restore your painting - but it is obvious that his work must be incredibly expensive.
