Hi is this bronze 19th century in your opinion?
I would be interested in how you can tell when it was made as I have heard many bronzes are still cast from the moulds/same factories or at least reproduced.
    Thanks for your help.

My opinion is no, and I'm following this thread because I have a small bronze (or mine may be white metal spelter with an overcoat of gold of some sort and a cast base), that has same signature. I believe mine may be early 1900s. Yours may be as recent as 1990s, as there was a recasting revival of small bronzes mounted upon nicely turned woods that decade. How large is this please?

It's about 27cm tall. Don't know exactly that's just from memory.
I don't own this but I am looking for an antique bronze statue.

Without commenting on the age of this piece (which I do not know or am able to guess), I have also seen with spelter and bronze the signatures reproduced but the piece may still be antique for example you might get a signature on a piece from 1915 or 1890 but it's not the original piece it's a copy but it's still an antique copy.
So I'm not sure that the signature can easily be used to determine age.

If you're looking for an antique, I'd have to say keep looking. I'm no expert, but I was raised by a metallurgist and I'm not seeing any 'old" on this piece at all.

I think the signature is or is supposed to be Georges Van der Straeten

    I hear you.
I just don't get that 'Old' feel from either the metal or the timber

The face is all wrong too, and the body "shape". (she's too skinny)

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

The one on LiveAuctioneers is 17" tall and went for $225. in 2009! It looks like someone's trying to make her eyes look blue-ish too!

I'm no expert, but it looks faux old to my eyes.

I never said anyone can use a signature to determine age.
I said yours is a more recent reproduction.

I just saw you are looking to buy an antique bronze and you don't own this yet.
    Whew! ::wipes brow::
Yah, am pretty sure this dates as far back as 1990.

Thanks, Aqui. I don't know what's up with those blue eyes, but this one is much larger, probably not antique, but approaching antiquity. I think this one on L.A. was also a repro from the original. For the cost of $225, it sold for a bargain price. No telling how much the auction markup and shipping costs were though.
