This (tie tack?) F-101 came from the estate of a US Air Force colonel. It is one-inch long and, as the card tells us, was from Bastian Bros. Co. of Rochester NY. The goldtone front of the F-101 is polished (and much shinier than it appears to be here), smooth, and incised "101." The back is stamped with a shield, inside of which is MPB (I think) and PIU.

Morgen, are you offering it as a giveaway? Or selling it? My hubby was in the Air Force and I'd love to give this to him. :)

    Hi,
Not a tie tack (look at the hole it would make in the tie).

Pat, I am giving it away. If you don't mind, I will offer it for one more day and if anyone else is interested, too, I will draw names.

Greg, I had that exact same thought, but I didn't know how else to describe it. It's not a 'pin,' as it doesn't pin. What is the correct term?

Just in case, those style "pins" were meant for the little buttonhole in the lapel of a man's jacket. Some old school styles still have one. It's where guys used to wear "ruptured ducks", i.e. WWII honorable discharge pins.

Thanks for that info about how this was worn.

You're welcome. They also wore trade/fraternal/etc stuff. They seem to collect me.

I know what you mean about things collecting oneself. :)

My husband says the depth of the screw is because sometimes the clothing was thick.

Back in the day, wool tweed was in style and that would fit. I hope somebody wears that airplane. I just picked up a Kaman helicopter tie bar today. Why ... dunno. Anyone know a chopper pilot?
