image1 (1).jpeg image1 (2).jpeg image1.jpeg image2.jpeg I bought this at an auction (very expensive!) as an '18th century English vase', but I have not been able to find anything like it online. I am a complete amateur in this area. The vase or amphora is 22 cm high. I can see no maker's mark. I would be most grateful for any clues as to what it is.

It's well done, but I doubt it's 18thC and I rather doubt it's English. The base is far too clean and actually, too thick. Those chrysanthemums look almost transfer.

Yes, I wondered about transfer, but not sure what that would mean about origin...

    Welcome to the forum, Bruce.
It looks French to me, related to Sèvres or Limoges.

Thanks for that. I'll search around. Have been getting worried that it might be 'fresh off the boat'!

However, unless it means not eating this week, or skipping the rent for a month, you are entitled to buy something you consider absolutely beautiful, and learn from it.

I have a feeling that this once was part of a pair, and were meant to set on a fireplace mantel. They could be late 19th century, early 20th century or even later.

No bailiffs at the door! Will learn from the experience, but still enjoy the object! Thanks.

Well, I think it’s relatively new because of the base, no mark at all, thickness of the base, but mainly the decoration looks machine done in its precision. But I’ve been lots of times wrong before!

Sounds good to me! When I run across something I don't know about, but think may be something, I will buy it if I like it. Then if I get stuck with it I don't mind ;)
