I bought this painting at an estate sale several years ago because I thought it was unusual. Can't make out the signature other than maybe an F at the beginning. why start a painting with maybe and indelible marking pen? Anyway, any information would be appreciated. It is so dirty! winter painting.jpg winter painting2.jpg winter painting3.jpg

Yeah, that signature is hard to make out.

Sorry you've been so ill the last few months. Sending a good thought your way for better health.

So, the image on the back is reversed?

It's not what I would suggest others do, but you can draw on the back of the canvas and then use a strong light to project it to the front where you can paint in things without having a pencil line. This creates obvious problems with viewing the progress of the painting, and it's colors correctly. It's not something I would expect a professional to do. It's also possible they traced the sketch/photo/image using this method, and then reversed it for the painting.

You do see sketches on the backs of art occasionally. Artists will reuse materials, paint over them, flip them over, etc. I once opened up a frame to find the noted painter had sketched out a completely different idea on the back. Always a fun surprise. This one being a reverse isn't likely to be the same reason though.

It's done with a sure hand. I'd think it was this particular painter's particular trick.

Sure hand is what made me think a possible tracing of a source sketch/image, but there is the overlap of the cans and fence. I can say I've done some questionable techniques to transfer an image when I didn't have the time, material, or care left to give. :hilarious:

This is as much as I could adjust the signature.
