The classic ‘staged’ approach. Yes,I see it now ..

 

Besides the two small prints shown on other threads, this is the only art I have picked up of late. Medium sized late 19th to early 20th century oil painting. Unsigned so think really just decorative. Surely European in origin. Frame is at least as good or better than the painting. Bought for $20.00.

 

I like it. Has a good overall look and the frame compliments the painting well. Nice buy

I saw two today that I wouldn't have minded grabbing, if I had a place to hang them. One was an oil pastel and charcoal of a snow scene at twilight. Really pretty colors and misidentified as a print. No siggie. $40. The other was acrylic or oil of a birch forest in the Spring. $25 with part of the frame missing. If either had been big enough it would be over my fireplace.

 

The oil pastel and charcoal sounds interesting.

 

Not sure how interesting per se, but it took real skill. It may have been a study for an oil.

 

A little learning is a dangerous thing. It's actually a copy Hooper made of an Edward Moran painting entitled 'Marine.' 1886. Reproduced in Art Interchange magazine. Must have been popular in its days.

I would have picked it up too. That's a great frame and even though the image is a copy, it's nicely done.

Interesting further information on Hopper's copies: "All of these works had been reproduced in the early 1890s in the periodical Art Interchange, aimed at amateur and student painters: the magazine contained collectible plates and instructions on how to reproduce the paintings..." So an authorized copy which explains why others are to be found. And makes this example even more interesting.

Sold the maritime painting above for $350.00 in one day.

Picked this up for $2.00 the other day. Smallish painting on silk (or silk-like fabric). Any translation of the text? Chinese or Japanese?



This is a large limited edition print by well-listed Romanian artist Harry Guttman (1933-2015). I see some listed as serigraphs but I have my doubts. Not really sure how it is printed. Giclee? Anyway, a good find for $3.00.

 

The Harry Guttman prints really nice-the whites of the buildings almost have an MOP iridescence to them (but not garish).

 

I know the exact place in my house that I would be delighted to hang the Guttman print. Love the colors.
