I've just realized not all of these are jewelry...though they are miniatures they're not all for wearing. If these need to be moved please do so and sorry in advance!

This distinguished gentleman caught my eye. His style and look remind me very much of Rembrant's work and the 17th century in general. He's painted on some sort of pressed(?) wood, and there's glue all over the back to hang him up.

What concerns me is the lack of apparent brush strokes. The others that came with him are all hand painted (I think/pray) and they have minimal strokes, but his lack of them seems a little obvious to be ignored. He's hand painted isn't he?

Is he 17th? or a 19th/20th homage? Either way he's beautiful.

I can see why. He looks a bit like Christopher Lee.
He is missing his frame, btw. The glue was someone's 'solution'.
Not Rembrandt's technique, but he does resemble Rembrandt's Rabbis. He also reminds me of Nostradamus.
Difficult to say. I'm not too sure about those white scratches, but let's wait for better eyes.:wideyed:

He does look like Christopher a bit!

The white scratches I think are something on it, like a bit of napkin or something. Its fiberous, but I didn't want to try to take it off in case I damaged it.

If its hand painted you should be able to see/feel the brush strokes
If its just a print you can see the dots/grid.
What is the material of the back? That looks suspicious to me
I m not convinced by this one...

The odd thing is I can see neither. No dots or grid like a transfer, but its very smooth minus the crackling. Is there a varnish that is masking the paint? It does look hand painted, but its wierd.

Here's photos of the painting under a loup, and of the back. The back is painted or varnished wood I think..?

I dont see a grid,I think its painted. If its painted with a very fine brush you don't see the strokes

Not the same, but makes me think of Raphael's portrait of Baldassar Castiglione.

Thank you!! I try my best :D

Great! That's one load off my shoulders at least then. I thought the brooch was the only good thing/as I thought it would be item out of the package, that I spent nearly 200 euros on....

Interesting! Very similar, even down to the tiny 'wrinkles'. Would it be safe to assume mine is also 19th then? That price though, shame they're having a laugh! Cause it would be nice haha

Thanks, I try to be picky and sometimes you turn up with a treasure haha. The photos on the listing really highlighted the red in his eyes which I was unsure about, glad to see it was the photo and not a devilishly (handsome) man! :hilarious:

Definitely a painting. Some oil painting techniques are about minimizing brush strokes as much as possible and varnish can flatten everything out as well. He's also small so not much paint used in strokes to begin with.

The style looks older to me, and he does have some craquelure, but not a huge amount. Paintings can be copied and cracks can form in temp changes, but I'd say at least early 19th if not older. I'm no expert though.

What an excellent find! He's really well done and fairly big.

Lovely, thank you all! I would like to attempt a gentle clean, and then he can go on the wall. He's staying with me!

But he's not convex, is he? And with those raw edges, he would have been inset into something?

I thought he was just missing a frame. You can see that the outer edge used to be covered.
I agree, he isn't convex, but then papier maché snuff box lids aren't always convex.
