    Hi all,

Came across this glass window in an antique shop in southern Ireland which i was in for the first time.

It cought my eye and am wondering where and when it might have been made.

Am thinking it may have been for a public house but that just a guess. 20241003_144645_resize_71.jpg 20241003_144651_resize_22.jpg

It’s very much in the tradition and style of our thirties and forties theatre poster art. I’ve rather a lot of that. I suspect it came from a baker or such rather than a pub, although those are often one and the same in Ireland.

we obviously have a different vision of revelry fun.gif

there's a man firing arrows at something and possible flames from the loft.

these are unstained glass windows of which there a still many in the uk,

The two men carrying bowls of food are taken from Pieter Brueghel's "The Peasant Wedding":

The other parts of the scene are parts of Brueghel paintings as well. I recognise parts from his "Dutch Sayings" painting.

Oh no now I'm going to have to go look that up because I have a lot of questions about bow and arrow guy and dumping-stuff-on-a-roof guy. :bored: Those must be some fun sayings! :playful: Nice catch!

Edit: Oh my God, it's SO delightful. How have I never seen this one before?? The painting and proverbs interpreted. That was really worth the read. :joyful:

Those are from Brueghel's "Dutch Sayings" painting. It is a combination of two Dutch sayings.
One is "to shoot one arrow after the other", meaning repeating a useless act.
The other is "to shoot one's arrows too soon" (not the exact translation, for our Dutch-speaking members: je pijlen verschieten), which means acting too soon, without deliberation.
You probably mean that broom sticking out of the attic window? Again, two Dutch sayings. One means acting out while the boss is away, the other means co-habitating while not being married.

I just told my husband I'm using the "to have the roof tiled with tarts" one. Amazing.

I adore the lady tying the devil down. They look so happy.

Yes, that is Brueghel's painting which we call "Nederladse spreekwoorden", "Dutch Sayings". It is the one I meant before.

That refers to a wealthy household, they can afford to tile the roof with food.

The stuff are playing cards. It is a saying that even a witless fool can win at cards (he is stupid enough to throw them out the window).
