Hi, new to this forum and my apologies if this is a really daft question.
We have inherited some Rosenthal Selb-Bavaria ceramics and a number of the pieces have a bird stamped over the maker/design mark underneath.

Is this an import mark or something else. I am intrigued

    Black headed gull.

I’ve a lot of Rosenthal, never seen that overstamp. I suspect a retailer.

Thanks for the bird ID. Still a weird stamp.
Any other thoughts from the forum welcome.

These overstamps are usually retailer's as above.

The German for seagull is Mowe. I’ve a vague memory of a shop with that name.

It might be helpful to show the object. This looks like a decorator's mark on a Donatello blank.

Germany -- that's Rosenthal under the stamp, I think.

So we'd expect to see this without the stamp.

Hi all, thank you for your thoughts.
Yes I have a number of pieces of differing designs with the Rosenthal SELB-BAVARIA stamp underneath. So yes from Germany. It is the green bird stamp which confuses me.
For example on this DONATELLO large side dish there is no bird over stamp but on the DONATELLO jug there is.
I will send a second message with photos of some Rosenthal saucers of a different design which are also all over stamped with the green bird.

Here some further pictures of Rosenthal saucers with green bird 'over stamp'.
Any further thoughts on the origin or significance of this stamp.

I think that a retailer's mark is likely correct. The other times you will see an overmark that obliterates the maker's mark is when the decoration is done by an outside company.

Why have an unrecognizable retailer's mark? It doesn't seem like a good advertising tactic.

Hi thanks for the replies. If it is a retailers mark has anyone any info on which retailer this might have been? Or any further help identifying the origins of this mark.

Good question. It might be a decorator's mark. Usually retailers' marks don't cover the manufacturer's mark. Sometimes you see "Made expressly for...". So, hmm...

There's a landscape/skyline behind the bird. Does it mean anything to anyone?

    The Rosenthal mark?
