Found this string of beads in a charity shop a couple of days ago. I will re-string them as they're on a tatty bit of cord at the moment.
The only way I could test them was with baking soda & a cotton bud - there's a picture of the result. Bakelite - or something else? It doesn't really matter to me as I love them anyway and for £1.50 who's to complain. They remind me of polished conkers!

That looks like a positive test to me :)

I think the color is called "Mississippi Mud".

Ding! DingDING! Those are bananas foster bakelite, at least the big beads are. You scored on this one. If that's the original string no wonder it died. Bakelite beads weren't dear at the time and they were strung on cheap cord. After 80 or 90 years it and the beads parted ways.

Thanks - I tried searching for bananas foster Bakelite but just came up with - recipes for bananas!!
The string/cord is far from dead - it's as strong as can be so it's maybe not original though it looks old and quite grubby. There is no clasp, the cord was just tied in a knot.

Thanks. I'm familiar with some "food" related names describing Bakelite colours such as apple juice, butterscotch, caramel, cherry, mustard, orange & toffee. I also know of spinach, though not the creamed variety! Have never come across creamed corn either or indeed foster bananas or Mississippi mud!
Wonder if they are terms more commonly used in the US than in the UK?

I love the food names. They're super cute! I don't even collect it, but just the names make it sound appealing!

Sorrento Ware with a probably Reuge movement.

I saw the original production of Cats the day after it opened.

That brought back a sweet memory, Johnny. You're a Florida boy, so might remember Bentley's Luggage in all the malls - I was a manager in the '80s and we sold those boxes, my assistant noticed I kept fondling a square box in a similar wood and motif as yours, but it sold. She'd told my Mom and used her employee discount for Mom to buy it, complete surprise under the tree that Christmas. If I recall correctly, the distributor was a firm called Surriento, our retail price was around $60. (the useless stuff that sticks in my brain!)

Hi there, newbie here. Bought a group of 26 coloured engravings(?) recently. Text at the bottom says that it was engraved in London in 1820 by M.Dubourg, but I'm not sure if I can believe it. How do I figure out if they are really that old or just copies made couple of years ago?

Here's the photo, sorry for the link, I'm not sure how to attach actual photo.
