He used to make walking sticks and knives So it looks like what he would use on top of one of his sticks but I've never seen anything like this before . Any idea what country , material etc it could be? Has an elderly gent with on the other side. Flowers on top. ws3.jpg

    Thank you so much. ws1.jpg

Looks like an Asian top piece/head for a walking stick, see example... https://www.rafaelosonaauction.com/...e-portrait-carved-walking-stick-19th-century/

From these photos--especially that chip on the roof--I would say it looks like a resin. It doesn't look like bone or ivory to me.

    I'm sorry for your loss!

Aah not the top...on the roof, here:
    chip.jpg

Bone usually has growth texture, and little black spots from where veins died. Ivory has Schreger lines. I don't see either of those in these photos...but maybe you can see them close up in person? It also looks to me like the color has been applied. I'm sure others will give their opinion too if you check back. :joyful:

That is a very difficult thing to go through, on top of the loss. Let us know if we can help on anything else of his. I'm also curious about his own work. I love a good carving!

Hello @Sadwidow. Welcome to Antiquers, this is a wonderful community of people to join. I have been where you are (my husband died of Alzheimers and colon cancer 13 years ago) and the folks here had held me up and cheered me on through that battle and loved on me through the aftermath. There are experts in all sorts of things here, things I didn't know existed. Read the funnies thread when you need a smile, the rants and raves and discover there's others going through the same or similar as you (or worse!). Share what you wish to but don't be surprised to discover the friends you make here become a part of your life. This is more than just antiques, it's family.

Thank you. So very sorry about your husband. At times i think it's getting a little "easier" but something so simple as a song will have me in tears. I will check out the funnies thread.

I am sorry for you loss. My husband also passed away last year.
I must say, although I could have identified your walking stick finial, I didn't, because your forum name is too painful for me at the moment. I have been going through a particularly emotional week, so I am a bit fragile. Maybe I will get used to the confrontation I face when seeing the name, I hope to be able to help with future queries.

It looks like Antiquers already took a look at one another member found. In that same thread you'll find someone else showed up with the exact same one. The conclusion was that they were mass produced resin.

For any of your objects you can try putting the photo through Google Lens and it will try to find a similar one. That can help you with value or what an object is. We're happy to help too. :D

@Any Jewelry Hugs to you too dear. I know what you mean about an emotional week or day or month. Hearing a song, seeing something in the newspaper or on TV, a familiar scent; any of it can send one back to strong memories and an aching heart. My kids get upset when I get sad listening to the "Saturday Morning Oldies" on a local radio station. Well, heck! That's my past and it's all behind me and I miss a lot of it. So be it. I have my moments. But I have a lot of good ones too.

Onward! Here, we have each other.
