The scene looks very similar to this William Henry Nutter work 'Watermill by a river in Spate." As to monogram, I see HP but could well be wrong. Here's a list of British artists, if you want to take the time to browse Ps.

And, by way, we always like to see a photograph of a work's back in addition to the front.

Thank you, Debora. Interesting...I'll definitely check that out. There is a label on the back, but whatever info was on it didn't survive. The monogram may be 3 letters, not sure. Thanks again

@Michelle M., One could almost pull "whn" out of that monogram, and I too think it shares a striking resemblance to your piece....which I'm hoping you don't mind I enlarged and straightened it!!

Kind of looks like "TJD" to me, with the bottom of the letter "D" wrapping up the rest of the initials.

Nothing legible on the sticker at all? Where did you find the work and what were you told about it?

AND other than some unreadable lettering on that label, there was just a spooky face that came into view........at least that's what I'm seeing!!!! (and I DID NOT create it!!!!!!!!!!:jawdrop::):)

I don't mind at all! While it's certainly in the same style as Nutting, the signatures don't match. Will have to do a bit more research. :bookworm: -lake-district-interest---william-henry--0QAQS.jpg 713add51-d07a-4710-aec1-c56d2bbcc470.jpg

I wasn't suggesting it was Nutter's work. But I did think it might be the same location.

Monagram has a definite H and J with a possible F to the left and possible D to the right..So FJHD or alternative use of letters. Not seeing a C,think it's just an add on to the end of the D.As Debora has shown similar scene painted by William Henry Nutter, Carlisle artist, who painted mostly scenes from that region (Cumbria).William Nutters father Matthew Nutter was one of the founding members of Carlisle School of Artists, and William himself gave lessons at the Annan Academy. So more than likely your artist is from that region or possibly Scottish.
