    I honestly think this looks so old that it is faked. I have no clue what to even call this thing or the kind of wood or how to value it.

    can anyone help?

    komokwa The Truth is out there...!

    is that last pic a pin wire going into the vessel......not used for liquid then....
    and the hardware , same colors as the wood...like it was buried in the clay....
    suspicious..................:shifty::shifty::shifty:

    I do think the patina looks pretty good, and I'm not quite willing to dismiss it as fake. I've seen a lot of fakes....and none of them were fake wood jugs with iron hardware.
    So...I'm hoping someone has seen something like this before, and can tell us where, when, and what; that would be useful to know.
    Likely lathe-turned, not hand carved, though that is not very revealing.

    It is so heavy I thought it might have metal inside. What kind of wood would be this heavy.

    I wonder what it would have been used for. Why would you need a heavy wood pot for non-liquids? We need Sherlock Holmes.

    I don't know what it is, but despite the mottled appearance to the colors of the clay, I don't see actual "use wear" on this item. Is there any?

    Nothing appears to have dissolved the rusted metal of the pin on the interior either.

    I agree. You would think spots would be rubbed lighter where it was handled. The inside has dirt in it. As though someone used it for a planter.

    What if it was dug up? I’m not about to wash it. Actually, it had a piece of paper in it. I will find it and upload a picture. More clues.

    There is nothing wrong with making a bad purchase, I’m sure we all have. That’s how people learn, sometimes.

    Thank goodness I didn’t pay a penny for this. I don’t know how they would have made this out of reclaimed wood. But I know people go to great lengths to fake things. Lol

    I think the intact pot may be something they found and the “crafted” design is their work. It may have a decorative value.
