What is the best way to determine who is a legit seller for roman glass. It is something I'd love to collect of course the opinions on my 1st crack at it disappoint !

 

You could buy from reputable auction houses. Christie’s, Bonhams, Sothebys, and others the next level or two down. I believe Artemis Gallery does a lot of ancient stuff. Do your research as with buying anything else if you’re looking to buy online. I try to buy out of collections I know to be old. Even if I don’t know a lot about something, if I know the collection is old that’s a good starting point. Hopefully others have some specific suggestions. It’s a perilous market, likely way more fakes than authentic examples. Ancient stuff is faked at an alarming rate.

 

I have also seen "Apollo art auctions" on liveauctioneers. London UK based. Can anyone comment on them?

 

I’d agree on reputable auction houses, not necessarily the big boys, some smaller ones like Roseberys are decent. There used to be a retailer called Ancient Arts, but they’ve gone, which is a shame. They had nice smalls.

I don’t know Apollo, but they’ve got very expensive premises. Look for a LAPADA member maybe.

Heritage, Doyle, Freeman, Leland Little are a few more with a solid rep for not passing fakes in the USA. Once you get much smaller than that if the auction house doesn’t specialize in a particular thing they likely don’t have a specialist for it. I wouldn’t totally trust any local/regional auction house to be able to tell a good or even half way decent Roman fake from an authentic example. I’d maybe trust some not to sell that type of thing from a consignor they found dubious but that’s about it. It’s such a niche thing and there’s so many things to know when you’re doing general sales.

 

The more i research it looks like London has a solid set of reputable dealers. Would someone who knows better than me agree that this one is legit.... the credentials and posts he has held seem to be reassuring.

You should also work to educate your eye by visiting museums with collections of Roman glass on display. David Whitehouse has written an excellent 3-volume series of catalogs of the collection of Roman glass at the Corning Museum of Glass that would be worthwhile if you are serious about collecting.

I’m based in the U.S. and there’s more than enough product here for me. I’ve not bothered straying to international sources. If I ever move away from general interest and specialize in something exceedingly rare maybe I’ll branch out.

 

If you edit your listing and hit the full size image button it will make it easier for everyone to see your photos. In this day and age it’s hard to bothered clicking into individual images to view them. I mostly scroll past any I have to click on. Full size will make them immediately visible when scrolling.

LAPADA members are usually ok, and you’ve redress.

if you can, have a mooch round the British museum, museum of London or some of our other Roman sites.

I have doubts about these latest three. Same reasons as the others.
