Ken Kidder is a native of Washington States, Skagit Valley. Although he is not native, he has been carving in the Northwest Coast Native style for many years.

just to be on the up and up....

I like and admire his work , but there are tell tale signs that it is not native made..

Yes.....I knew the person who amassed this collection - there was a pre-sale for those who had known him. His children were not collectors of native art, so they had to figure out what to do with the collection after his passing. I got one small item. There are still many nice items left, including some totem poles and panels that are way too big for most people. His house had been built around them, basically. His father had been a well-known fiddler, and I knew him slightly also. Nice people.
One very fun item is the raven stealing the sun sculpture. The raven sits on the box that had contained the sun - but when you tip the raven back, the sun comes out of the box.

Another nice piece, not part of the auction, was a mask depicting Bill Holm. Very lifelike, and it would have been fun to see his reaction if it had been danced at a potlatch which he attended. Possibly by Phil Gray, but I don't recall the carver for sure. I suspect it is now with the Burke Museum.
Our purchase was this frog by Doug Lafortune, about a foot long, so possible to fit into our house.

I really liked the whale dance blanket. Probably wool, so not for me. There was a Curtis print in there too, and if they find it the collectors may send it well past its estimate.

did ya see the estimate for the gold?

I guess those gold pendants are under-estimated....

To be completely honest, I've had some good 'finds' in auctions through these guys. When I get stuff from them, it's a Saturday drive up to pick up my stuff, hitting 3-4 other places on the way, and then home by dinner.

I did see that antique Cowlitz basket, and I hope someone from the tribe, which runs a casino just up the highway from me, is bidding on that and going to return it home, so to speak.

Holy shamoly! That’s an impressive collection!

Has anyone had items shipped through this auction house? If so were you happy with how it went? I wouldn’t want to bid only to find out they are unreasonable with their shipping costs. Looks like they only do 12”x12”x8” or smaller boxes in house. Large items are farmed out. That will limit what I’d bid on. I don’t like dealing with outside shippers. Maybe I should get over that.

I've never had anything shipped; as I note above I can drive there. If I was ever going there for myself, to pick up things I had bought, and another person here wanted me to pick something up and then mail it to them myself, I'd be happy to do so. I doubt I can afford anything in this auction though.

That’s a mighty kind offer. Hopefully you leave some bids. You never know what might slip through the cracks!

not a lot of cracks there , though........

and yes...I've had to deal with off site shippers at other auctions...... mostly with good results....... but still , not a fan of the extra costs and security..

And the 25% buyer's premium seems sort of steep; something to keep in mind when bidding.
