Maybe one day I won’t have to ask after my baskets but todays not the day. What do I have here?

The “whirling log” basket doesn’t seem quite old enough to have been from the age of innocence for that symbol. I don’t know if it’s a newer NA basket or a newer basket from elsewhere trying to be NA? The bird basket doesn’t really look NA to me. I was thinking south of the border, or African but I really don’t know. The last basket looks like it has some age and may be NA. 37589898-7E58-4AFA-B875-94682425C508.jpeg C01D0DEE-DA45-44A8-B0F7-D297486BC853.jpeg 508DD95B-D29F-4C91-881E-37E6E8A9DEFC.jpeg A51EFE74-C671-4BDE-AB4D-F81F0A0ADEC2.jpeg 6E094E51-4E34-48AD-8539-89B550782D75.jpeg 271B6378-7F6F-4A81-B23B-45F9C9661A11.jpeg 252E6E0E-43E3-44B7-B6D4-41767E161624.jpeg

All are NA. Great finds! 1 and 2 are Tohono O'odham (formerly and erroneously called 'Papago').

I agree that #1 doesn't look old enough to be pre-1933 or so, but it could be.

    These baskets are relatively common.

#3 is the best of them. It may be Pima-- also more properly today called Akimel O'odham, a related tribe also from Southern Arizona.

Yay!! I was thinking the third may be from that area but obv was totally unsure about the first two. Thanks much for your help on these! I didn’t get them for nothing but they average out to a pretty reasonable price for being what you’ve confirmed they are.

Another great thing about antiquers--- a place I can hang out and actually be called 'young'! Not too many of those places in my life. :D

as far as I know..... the American Indian fought and died for their country.... their land.... in WW2...........
so I highly doubt that the rolling log design is post war...........

I've likely said this before..... but... my off the cuff rule of thumb for Tohono O'odham baskets...
    is the rim stitching...

    post ww2....... 1960's forward

The Tohono O’odham (Papago) people of Arizona were major basket makers in the late nineteenth century, primarily making them for their own use. At the turn of the century, basket weaving was being practiced in every home. This continued into the early twentieth century, at which time Southwest Indian basketry became a collectible commodity. By the 1920s, basket weaving all but disappeared.

like I said off the cuff......always exceptions......

but if I saw the last one at an antique shop or estate sale........ with that dark tight double twist......... ( I might suspect Pima first..)...... I'd jump on it
