That exuberant floral embroidery on her bodice is what makes me think Colonial Latin America.

I was wondering if it had been relined or not! If it hasn't been relined (apart from the staples being an indicator) it also doesn't have the darkening of the canvas verso that you would expect of a much older painting I wouldn't think? I'm always learning too :)

I'm not of the opinion that the missing letter in the surname is a V ,it seems a more rounded letter and I think it may be a g so maybe M Elligers.Again this might be a long shot but maybe Dutch artist Christina Maria Elliger (1731-1802).A biography states that[ At 17 she made good potraits using pastel crayons ].

As Debora showed, it isn't her signature. Besides, this could never have been painted by an 18th century professional Dutch artist. It is very charming, but this naive painting style would not have been accepted from Dutch artists of the period.

  14. Darn..... I was hoping it was a portrait of her as a younger girl...

  15. Here's another that would put her older than the girl in my painting but younger than the one I already posted for comparison...

  18. Hello all.... I found all of the information needed. I was correct... it is Maria Luisa of Parma.. Here is the information I recovered -

    M. Elligers is typically identified as Matthias Elligers. He was a Dutch painter known for his portraits, particularly in the 18th century.

Matthias Elligers was known for his detailed and elegant portraits, often depicting nobility and aristocracy of the 18th century. His works typically showcase:

    1. Realistic Portraiture: Elligers captured the personality and status of his subjects with great precision, using soft brushwork and attention to detail.
    2. Historical Figures: He painted notable individuals, including Maria Luisa of Parma and members of the Dutch nobility, often highlighting their clothing and accessories to reflect their rank.
    3. Stylistic Influences: His style combines elements of Dutch realism with the elegance of Rococo and early Neoclassicism.
Matthias Elligers painted the portrait of Maria Luisa of Parma around 1780. This period reflects his signature style, characterized by attention to detail and a focus on the elegance and refinement of his subjects.

Matthias Elligers typically signed his paintings with "M. Elligers" or "Matthias Elligers." His signature can often be found in one of the corners of the artwork, sometimes accompanied by the date. The style of his signature varies, but it usually reflects the artistic conventions of the 18th century.

Here are some notable works by Matthias Elligers:

    1. Portrait of Maria Luisa of Parma (circa 1780)
    2. Portrait of Prince William V of Orange (dated 1784)
    3. Portrait of a Lady in a Blue Dress
    4. Portrait of Countess Elisabeth von Kessel
    5. Portrait of a Young Boy with a Dog
    6. Portrait of a Nobleman in Traditional Attire
