I bought this brass telescope online but unfortunately I know nothing about it at all. It's fully functional and each section twists so is in full working order. I was told by one person that it was possibly quite rare to find a telescope with sections that twist which still work? Does anyone know anything at all about this sort of item? Where it could have come from, time period, value, anything at all!

    Welcome to Antiquers.
When you say twist does that mean to allow the draw to extend ?
Normally the draws just slide out.
Yours is a 3 draw scope.
    Has it any markings ?

Thanks! Yes sorry I haven't made that very clear, the draws slide out and each one twists which I believe is something to do with focusing it? Hope that makes it clearer! There are no markings which of course makes the whole thing more difficult!

Could there be marks and/or a signature within? It could be that that may be done to protect them from wear, tear and polishing.

I'll have a look! How would I go about looking within it? (Sorry I'm very new to this!)

I don't know but it went together so there's a way to take it apart for service and cleaning. Wait for a pro to inform you.

    Someone will help. :)
Don't force anything but could any of it unscrew?

I just sat and unscrewed each section, part by part and found nothing :( I looked really closely at each section and there's just nothing at all! Does this mean even a professional would find it hard to give me information?

Good closeup photos of the rear and front lenses including the metal holding them may tell us something. My first impression is that this is an "Indiabrass" decorative item which works as a telescope but isn't a high quality one. The clues to me are the newish condition of all of the visible brass parts and what looks like an unpolished surface with a first-time patina. No signs of age or use are visible.

Possibly but there could be a mark that is very hard to find.
Design may be all someone here, or a pro, needs to see.
Measurements may be a factor too.

Yes take the telescope in your pocket but take some other things you want appraised too so you won't come away totally disappointed. I seriously doubt the telescope would be appraised at over about $20.00 if the appraisers are familiar with antique telescopes.

Really?? Unfortunately I don't have anything else to have appraised so I would only be able to take that in with me. It extends to around 40cm, I paid around £70 for it.

It is a basic three draw telescope. If there were a maker's name it would be on the section at the eyepiece end. In my opinion you paid rather over the odds for this. It may be a modern reproduction, but even if it is a period piece (the period would be about 1900) I would expect an auction price in the £20 to £30 range.

I always advise beginning collectors to get a receipt from the seller stating the approx age of items they buy, with enough description to identify the item, and a "refund if found to differ" clause. If seller won't provide one, shop elsewhere.

I had (and sold) one like that which was dated as being Victorian/Edwardian, around 1900. But it was a bit more elaborate than this one.

Very best part is you get to talk like a pirate.

    Call everyone "Matey."

Say "Shiver me timbers!" very frequently, for no apparent reason.
