    Hello,

I am not sure if this is right topic for this group.
i purchased a folding fan with oriental tyle hand painting.

I really appreciate the painting because it is identical to the style of painting from Chinese porcelain.

I have difficulty to identify the crown logo and mark on the frame. it would be appreciated if someone in the group could help on the origin and age of the Fan. IMG_4244.jpg IMG_4246.jpg IMG_4247.jpg IMG_4248.jpg IMG_4254.jpg IMG_4255.jpg

What part of the world did you find it in? What were you told about it? And is that the best quality photograph you can post of the mark?

It is a beautiful and very European looking fan, ca 1890s, made by the Gebrüder (Brothers) Rodeck of Vienna.
With that crowned initial it seems to have been made for a member of a European noble family, that of a king or (grand)duke.

The quality is good, but it isn't the quality you usually see on fans of the high aristocracy. For example, I have several fans of this quality and better in my collection. So it is not one a royal or duke would have commissioned.
Given the bird's nest I expect it was made to be presented to an aristocratic lady on occasion of her engagement or marriage. Initials M and I could be his and hers?
The crown is that of a (grand)duke or king, not an imperial one.;)

Although they believe it was once owned by a member of the Hohenzollern family, the crest is not a Hohenzollern crest and the crown is not a royal one but more likely that of an earl/count. So aristocracy rather than royalty.

All that aristocratic 'stuff' is very complicated, and it differs from one country to another.;)

Not sure where you purchased the fan, but the crown looks a lot like the Belgian crown. Who knows all crowns look alike…

And the Danish crown, but also a couple of Central European crowns, no longer used.
Such crowns are all based on crowns of the Holy Roman Empire, which determined who should wear what shape crown and how it should be decorated and bejewelled. Since so many countries and families share a Holy Roman Imperial heritage, the crowns are all similar.
