Have not a clue on age of these. Just found it strange that someone kept the broken one. The clothes on the doll look old to me.

The Samurai doll may have been a figure given to boys to celebrate "boy's day" in Japan traditionally celebrated on May 5th each year. They were normally displayed under a bell jar to avoid the dust that this poor guy has been exposed to.
Girl's day was celebrated March 3rd, when young girls would display their Hina dolls, representing the Emperor and Empress and their court, I think 26 dolls in total.

No idea why the broken vase would have been retained but with the hole drilled in the bottom, they were probably intended as lamps, mounted on a wooden base.

I can think of a number of things I saved the part(s) for...

Like a single plastic peg for a bent plywood truck :arghh:!

Now I can't locate the part(s), and can't let go of the thing - the part(s) might show up!

The vases are Japanese. The mark appears to be the orchid of Koransha, and the writing under one of the marks should be "Fukagawa Sei". That dates your vases to after 1875 and before 1895 when Koransha and Fukagawa were divided.
