    That exuberant floral embroidery on her bodice is what makes me think Colonial Latin America.

    I was wondering if it had been relined or not! If it hasn't been relined (apart from the staples being an indicator) it also doesn't have the darkening of the canvas verso that you would expect of a much older painting I wouldn't think? I'm always learning too :)

    I'm not of the opinion that the missing letter in the surname is a V ,it seems a more rounded letter and I think it may be a g so maybe M Elligers.Again this might be a long shot but maybe Dutch artist Christina Maria Elliger (1731-1802).A biography states that[ At 17 she made good potraits using pastel crayons ].

    As Debora showed, it isn't her signature. Besides, this could never have been painted by an 18th century professional Dutch artist. It is very charming, but this naive painting style would not have been accepted from Dutch artists of the period.

  11. I am trying really hard to make that name fit... and the E is certainly similar.... But
    i still think there is a S at the end of the name.
