Featured Antiques that never sell.

I have an old rocking chair that was my grandparents. I can remember sitting in it when I was about 7 years old or so. Somebody at some time sat in it, and broke the sides. I have to check it to see if it has any labels. It is very small and sits close to the floor. Just right for a shortie like me.

 

An exception may Palmer-Smith pieces. known for quality, design and hand hammering. I got a little hooked on these years ago..... and one could find them for $3. to $15.

 

I have managed to sell silver plate but it has to be absolutely immaculate.

 

I think ppl are working harder to extract silver and gold since times are tough.

 

Can't say I have seen this maker. The piece shown is obviously an exception and not at all what I am talking about. Had a look at some of their other work and have to say that much of it would probably fall into the unsellable category around here. There are a few killer pieces.

 

I collected Hummel's for over 20 years. I think out of the 300 or so I had, I kept maybe 10 that were important to me...The rest were worth squat. Same for all the Wedgwood jasperware I hoarded thinking I would have my retirement set!

 

That's interesting about the Hummel's (and I had always thought they weren't highly valuable), yet I have a friend who sells both on Ebay and has a booth in a consignment shop and does very well with them. She's always on the hunt for them at estate sales and auctions.

 

You wouldn't have thought it was cost effective would you. Amount of energy required etc. they must have a really efficient process

I know it's illegal dumping, but I kind of love the idea of winding through the woods and finding strange artifacts like that.

 

Why don't schools take these pianos for students?
If the owners donate them it is a win win.

A friend of my father started collecting ( as in amassing ) very worn silverware from junk shops and estates sales, the stuff that was unsaleable
he then collected X rays from hospitals who didn't know how to get rid of the monthly tonnage of tests.
then various photographic labs, etc etc
This was in 1968

All I remember was them moving to a really upmarket house ...He certainly worked for it ....

I actually have an upright piano in my classroom. (I don't teach music.) I don't know how to play it, but I always have students who do.

Once I even 'commissioned' a student to play Chopin as part of a creative writing lesson plan. After an elaborate set-up, students had to 'translate' the music into written images and then we turned them into poems. It actually kinda worked!

 

Pianos, I didn’t want it, my husband did because he plays. Our younger son does as well. I still don’t want it, but he plays it. When our Granddaughter comes, she plays it, so now it will stay. Over the years our younger son played the violin, clarinet & saxophone. Where are they now, still in his room in the closet!

 

Some of it sells if it's old or unusual enough, or was made by the right company. 1950s wedding gifts need to go to the scrap yard or get put under plants.

Amen. When silver became to expensive to use they first went to weighted pieces (melt 'em), then silverplate, and then pewter. There was also some made in the style of Colonial pieces. THe pewter you can sell to people who make fishing weights, and at scrap yards. Weighted sterling pieces are tissue-thing silver over a steel armature and cement, chalkware or wax. I call it sterling tinfoil for a reason. You can sell it, but only at scrap value, which isn't much.
