    Hello

We're at Redcliffe, QLD, just north of Brisbane.

My grandmother bought a WH Goss Parian Ware "Tragedy" shortly after she became a nurse, around 1930 or so. Photo attached.

I'd like to know more about the GH Goss company and how they came to be in Australia as I'm curious to know where she might have bought this from. Are there any GH Goss experts here? He made some beautiful, life-like statuettes.

Does she have a dagger in her hand, or is that just a fold of her mantle? The Greek Muse of Tragedy, Melpomene, is often shown with a dagger. There may have been a line of the Muses.

    Hello Debora and Bronwen,

Yes Debora, I did see that site thanks.

There's no mark at all that I can see. I've seen this statuette described as Melpomene, Muse of Tragedy (and she is sometimes shown with a dagger) and also as Clorinda. With mine, it does look like a dagger I think.

in this very similar piece (link below), you can clearly see the dagger. Is there such a thing as GH Goss fakes? The base on mine is much nicer. I'm wondering how copies still manage to retain all of the beautiful detail.

The McTear's listing (second link) describes as Clorinda the seated, armored figure, not the one like yours. The one like yours they describe as the Muse of Comedy.

Thanks for those corrections. I've attached a comparison pic of mine with the Roaring20s pic. You can see they're quite different. I wonder how the fakes are made then, and how much artistry is involved in making them. Are they individually sculptured just the same as the original, or are they just manufactured from moulds? This is turning into a bit of a rabbit warren isn't it?
