Okay, I’m completely stumped by what this 9-inch long, pear-shaped metal box may have been made to contain. Any ideas? A hat of some kind, perhaps?

Between the handle and the sticker, does it say Burglary ?

Good spotting. It says “Contents none of your business / burglar proof / fireproof” in what appears to be a child’s writing.

Similar boxes (but different shapes) seem to be related to military costume. Perhaps a storage box for epaulets?

Could be! Great suggestion. Many thanks! About the correct size, and shape.

That's what I was trying to think of too. The ones I've seen have all been British. It makes sense, given that those are made of bullion cording and embroidery.

You would, if you had to wear them and they cost more than your car....

Please fit it with a custom silk lining and send it my way. Mine need a graceful home. C978ACFE-7013-4820-9FE4-A6312A330619.jpeg

They were made with proper gold thread and officers had to buy them, so a good box was essential.
